Retail Moment โ February 10
This isnโt new. Walmart first introduced sensory-friendly hours as a Saturday pilot during Back-to-School 2023. But itโs still worth highlighting because of what it represents and how intentionally itโs being executed in stores today.
The adjustments were simple. TV walls moved to static images. Radio turned off. Lighting reduced where possible. The goal was a less stimulating shopping experience for customers with sensory sensitivities.
The response was overwhelmingly positive.
So positive that Walmart expanded the program in November, making sensory-friendly hours permanent across all U.S. and Puerto Rico stores, now running daily from 8am to 10am local time in my local store. Hours vary by location, but the intent is consistent. Create a calmer environment that makes shopping more accessible for more people.
In my local Maple Grove store, the message is highly visible in apparel through focal wall signage, making it clear this is not an afterthought or a quiet policy change. Itโs part of the experience.
What stands out most is how small operational changes can have an outsized impact. Lower sound. Less visual stimulation. A quieter pace. For many shoppers, these adjustments fundamentally change whether a store feels approachable or overwhelming.
And importantly, this initiative came directly from listening. Feedback from customers, associates, and families shaped the decision to continue and expand the program. As Walmart shared, changes that may seem small to some can transform the experience for others.
Belonging looks different for everyone. Retail environments should recognize that.
This is a reminder that customer experience isnโt always about adding more. Sometimes itโs about removing friction and creating space for people to feel comfortable being there in the first place.

I work with retailers to design store environments and experiences that balance operational realities with inclusive, customer-first thinking.
