Execution Carries the Energy
Retail in Real Time ● Video Edition ● March 3
Dick’s Sporting Goods recently installed a new athletic footwear presentation built around motion. A female mannequin is positioned mid-run on a raised black platform, driving directly into the space.
The shift is immediate.
When you introduce visible motion into a footwear set, the category reads differently. It feels directional. Performance-led. Forward.
This is strong visual merchandising instinct.
Where the installation felt slightly unresolved was with the male mannequin. At the time of my visit, he was static, which interrupts the momentum narrative the runner establishes. I assume this will be corrected quickly. Dick’s typically refines details like this fast. But for a brand that consistently executes at a high level, even small gaps become noticeable.
The platform presents the larger opportunity. The solid black base is fine, yet it lacks environmental context. Wrapping or texturing it to mimic trail terrain would ground the runner in a believable setting and fully commit to the performance story. Dick’s often wraps bases elsewhere to create immersive environments. Applying that same thinking here would elevate the set meaningfully.
When motion becomes the concept, the surrounding environment must support it.
Energy attracts attention.
Execution earns credibility.
