Reworking Loyalty, Literally
Retail Field Notes · December 22
Spotted this in-store at Carhartt and it stopped me in my tracks.
Carhartt Reworked invites customers to trade in worn Carhartt gear in exchange for gift cards. Jackets, hoodies, overalls, even well-loved basics all have clear, transparent values attached.
This isn’t a promotion.
It’s a signal.
A signal that durability actually matters.
That longevity is part of the brand promise, not just a line on a website.
And that sustainability doesn’t have to be abstract. It can be practical, visible, and transactional.
This is exactly why I’ve added Retail Field Notes to my playbook.
Field Notes are:
• Short, fast observations
• Captured directly from the store
• Focused on programs, signals, and decisions rather than full storytelling
Different from Retail Moments, which zoom in on a specific execution.
Different from Retail in Real Time, which steps back into broader analysis.
Sometimes the most interesting retail ideas don’t need a long write-up.
They just need to be noticed.
Carhartt didn’t just design a take-back program.
They designed trust into the store experience.
More Field Notes coming.
How I can help:
If you’re thinking about how sustainability, loyalty, or brand values show up clearly on the sales floor, I help retailers turn those ideas into programs customers actually understand and use.

Great signal! Time to recycle and make money by doing it. Great find!!❤️
